Radio in the hospital (Radio K2)

Description: Radio K2 is an Italian project undertaken by students admitted to AuxologicoPiancavallo (a hospital in Italy) which allows them to stay in touch and make their voices heard both in and outside of the hospital. The initiative was also followed by the creation of TeleK2 in 2011, through which the children were able to propose a television series, with themes related to science fiction, history and lifestyles.
Notes: The main objectives of this initiative are to reduce the isolation faced by hospitalised children and to allow them to interact with pupils in their own school develop and implement a joint initiative. The radio session enables the children in the hospital to make their voices heard and to assume responsibility to organise and conduct sessions (thus boosting their confidence). The Radio K2 initiative was awarded the 1st prize in the 3rd edition of the Premio National Centomontagne 2008 and, in 2009, the PremioSpeciale del PresidentedellaRepubblica. It should be mentioned as drawbacks that hospital radio and tv implies technology which has to be handled by teachers and/or the school technical staff. The Italian model needs probably adaptation before transferring it to other countries and contexts. A more generic model has not been developed yet.
